My Running Story

My first Half Marathon, Tinkerbell Half @ Disneyland
My name is Nikkie and I am 29.  I've always enjoyed running, but developed asthma in middle school so I didn't do it more than necessary.  In college I picked it up again and was running 5 miles a day for the better part of 2 years.  Of course, running with an ocean view is always easier on the brain.

When I moved home after college my best friend and I would take on random adventures just for the sake of trying it once.  We tried bikram yoga, indoor rock climbing, and eventually, a mud run.  We did a couple a year for 2 years, always training by only running every day for a week before the race.  Spring of 2012 we both separately decided to run a half marathon.  I had a back injury, so she picked a race in October and I picked one for January the following year.  After suffering another back injury that fall, I ran the race wholly unprepared and although I got through it, it was probably the worst experience of my life and involved getting very sick on the side of the freeway on the way home.

Many people would quit, but something about that race made me want to redeem myself.  I ran my second half marathon in June of that year and after experiencing a much better race, was hooked.  The half marathon quickly became my favorite race distance and after 3 years and 33 half marathons, it still is!  I definitely have other race distances and types in my future, but the half marathon will always hold a special place in my heart.
